Mercedes Benz repair: Replacing v belt on 1985 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel, mercedes benz 300d, benz 300d

Question
The belt on my Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel tore off as I was driving down the highway. Now I have gone to several auto stores to buy a replacement and they all say that it  takes two V belts to the alternator and the size they give me according to the book is too small. My manual does not have a diagram of the engine area to show how the belts are installed. Where can I possibly get a diagram to show this.

Answer
Greetings! They have changed the belts since your  car was produced. They are all slightly  shorter,  which makes it tougher to install. I  dont have a diagrahm of thhe assembly,  but i can tell you  how to. Thare is a 17 mm bolt   at the most upper part of the alternator which has a threaded rod attched to it. You will need to loosen the nut on  the backside of this bolt. You  will  need to remove your  air filter housing to get to  this. it  makes it  much easier. Then loosen the bottom  17 mm bolt. Then on  the threaded rod at the end  the is a nut made onto  the rod, You  will loosen the belt   from  there. And make sure  you   get this as loose as possible because of the slightly  shorter belt.  Turning the nut counterclockwise loosens the  belt. Then reverse the procedure  to install and tighten. Thanks and i hope this helps, Rick
