Mercedes Benz repair: BROKEN CAM ON 84 300D MERCEDES, drive sprocket, cam towers

Question
Hi;
I snapped the cam off just behind the  drive sprocket on my 1984 5 CYL. turbo motor.Would a cam replacement only fix it or does this bend the valves making a complete head job necessary?
                                        thanks Jim

Answer
Greetings Jim!
You should have to only replace the cam and towers.
When the diesel engine jumps time or the timing chain breaks, the valves and the pistons are in a straight line so when  and if the piston hits the valve, the valve is straight to the piston and will close the valve.
However it is possible that it broke or breaks the cam towers.
When retiming the engine, note that the injection pump will also have to be timed at 24 BTDC.
And The spring on no 1 cylinder on injection will have to be took apart with the spring extracted and a drip meter installed for proper timing. it should drip once in 9-13 seconds. If it drips once before you count to 9 it is going to be rich. if it takes longer than 13 it will be lean. 11 is a good number and is what i always set mine at. Thanks for your question and i hope this helps.
