Mercedes Benz repair: Check engine, blinking red light, dash board

I have a 1990 300E 2.6 MB. The check engine light on the dash board is always on. I was able to remove it once by resetting it, by pushing the button of that box with blinking red light and plenty of holes under the hood. After a few months the check engine light came on again. The car runs okay. What is wrong?  Thanks a lot..

You have an engine fault code that is throwing the check engine light. You will need to have someone with a scanner check to find out what fault code is being thrown and then address the problem from there. It could be a multitude of different things.
