Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): coils burnt-out, engine details, v twin

Question
Hi,i have been given a task of repairing a Honda gx620 20hp which is powereing a generator.
I can already see it needs a pair of ignition coils, which appear to be burnt-out(visual scorching to both coils and no spark). Can you think of any reason why this may happen to an engine which was (apparantly) working fine until this failure.I also notice corrosion/rust to flywheel magnet and to both coils:-possible cause??.Any help is appreciated.Engine details:Honda GX620 v-twin 20hp,14.9 kw,614cc/cm3.Serial numbers on crankcase:(vxd4)gcad-2041925(research tells me the serial number makes this the K1 version e.g Gx620K1.

Answer
Kevin,

It is highly unlikely that BOTH coils have burnt out.

Lets isolate this a little bit further...

TAKE OFF THE GROUND WIRE THAT IS ATTACHED TO BOTH COILS.

Now see if you have spark?

If you do you, REATTACH the wire to the coils you disconnected.

FIND the wire that is coming out from the inside of the engine...(the oil alert wire) and unplug it.. (normally yellow)now see if you have spark..if you do, you problem is a bad oil switch

Rust on the flywheel has NOTHING to do with it.  A magnetic field is still created no matter how rusty the flywheel is.

If your screwdriver sticks to the magnets the flywheel is fine.

Please do some more trouble shooting and let me know what you find!
