Mercedes Benz repair: 1969 Mercedes 280sl, mercedes benz 280sl, fuel pressure regulator

Question
this 280 sl is a 6 cyl  it has sat for a long time  we installed new spark plugs   ran great, but is loading up with unburned fuel, is there a way to check the fuel pressure regulator?  the plugs are black with dry black soot. I am a class A mechanic, but can not find info  thanks

Answer
A fuel pressure regulator failure is very rare.
The cold start valve could be bad, they are a common failure = excess fuel.
Have you tested or replaced the ignition coil, read the FYI threads first.
The fuel injection pump thermostat may be bad = excess fuel when warm.
The thermo time switch for the cold start valve could be bad.

Here are some threads you should read as FYI and do not do.
