My recently purchased 1975 Mercedes 450 SEL all of a sudden started dumping gas into the crankcase. My son who is a Ford Truck and Diesel man thinks it may have something to do with a regulator. Apparently this is a mechanical system and he isn't sure how to trouble shoot it. All his stuff is electronic and of course not Mercedes. Can you in any way shed any light on this problem and where to start checking. Maybe it isn't a regulator but what else could possibly cause this problem. My son was driving it when it happened and I guess it really was using gas. This car is in very good condition with no rust and very clean but of course parts are expensive. Thank you for any help you can provide for me.

I goofed. After talking with my son today he informed me that it was electronic fuel injection and not mechanical so will this change your answer. If it is electronic would the part number be the same and it wouldn't have a fuel distributor would it? I'm sorry that I misunderstood what he said. T^hanks for your help.

If the problem is still there, check fuel pressure at fuel distributor.

Yes.
Slight revision in diagnosis.
Possible bad:
#1. Fuel Pressure Regulator.
#2. Ignition coil.
#3. Catalytic converter.

And/or any combination of the three.

More data needed:
How many miles on vehicle?
What is VIN#.
Any performance/power issue?
Current MPG if known?

Thanks again for your prompt reply. The power/performance was great on this car. From 0 to 40 was about average but after 40 it would shoot up like a rocket. Unknown MPG as I didn't have the car long enough. It wasn't bad but exact is unknown. The mileage is 105,000.
The VIN is 113033112032725. The car was only in my possession for less than two weeks when this happened. We will check the items mentioned and see what we can find but will wait until you have a chance to digest the questions you asked. TYhanks again.

Single or twin pipes going into center muffler?

Sounds like catalytic converters are 50%+ plugged, with other suggested issues possible.

Tell him "whunter" asked you to call, we have spoken RE: your catalytic converters.
 
Testing:
Disconnect exhaust at manifold.
Support the exhaust with binder straps.
Test drive around the block; note any power increase.

Warning:
Ear protection may be needed.
Danger:
Do NOT go further than around the block, you can cook other units with exhaust gasses.

Again you came through in a fast manner. Thanks for the prompt reply and being patient while I ask question after question.

When I told my son your answer he asked which regulator it might be as it has two on the fuel lines. Also he told me to tell you that it was pushing oil and gas out of the manifold when it happened and ran really ragged. Also he was wondering if you think the cold start injector could cause this much fuel to be injected? Apparently the fuel was coning out pretty fast with a mixture of motor oil. I'm not sure whether I made that statement before or not.

At over 100K miles, I would replace the Cold Start Valve if it where my car.
The part is roughly $150.00 and they are an issue on older cars.

The fuel volume you refer to = injectors jammed open or extreme high fuel pressure.

The catalytic converters would be wrecked by that level of fuel.

To protect the engine I would refill with 20W50 run fifteen minutes, drain and refill with fresh oil.

The excess fuel must be removed from crank case.
