Mercedes Benz repair: 1971 280 sl, fastlane, rotor

Question
I am trying to tune up car and order parts. You web site asks "which engine range" in order to purchase points, rotor, dist. cap. How do I determine "Engine range" I have never encountered this question. Also in your products you give an option of "aluminum or steel/iron" is one better than the other?
