MG Car Repair: Removal of 1977 MGB Turn Signal Switch, turn signal switch, steering wheel

Question
QUESTION: How do you remove the turn signal switch from a 1977 MGB. Do you have to remove the steering wheel? How do you remove the steering wheel? What tools do you need? Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Phil,

No, you do not need to remove the steering wheel. Just remove the plastic covers over the turn signal switch and the wiper switch and you will see two screws holding the wiper switch on and after removing that, the two screws holding the turn signal switch will be exposed.

QUESTION: Howard - Thank you so much for your response. The design of the 1977 MGB Turn Signal Switch is different from the previous years; The unit comes only with a solid hole in the middle and there appears to be only way to get the old one out is to remove the steering wheel.  My question now is how does one remove the steering wheel? Again, the 1977 steering wheel is made of rubber and no place to put a puller without ripping the rubber? Please advise. Thanks for your help and wisdom.

Answer
Hi Phil,

When I needed to pull a steering wheel I never had a wheel puller. The difficult ones I sat in the drivers seat and because my legs are long I was able to apply force to the bottom of the wheel with my legs while I had the nut flush with the end of the shaft and I took a small block of aluminum and placed it on the end of the shaft and hit it a couple couple of times with a hammer and the wheel always came loose, then I just removed the nut and off with the wheel. You must apply a lot of force upward toward you with your legs or have some one pull hard because the shaft is a telescoping shaft in case of a crash and you don't want to drive the shaft inward.
