MG Car Repair: 1974 MGB turn signals, haynes book, turn signal flasher

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1974 (chrome bumper Cdn version), bought new, that I have been storing and working on for some time, to keep it running and roadworthy. Up until this year, the turn signals worked, and then they just stopped. I checked the circuit voltage and found there is juice at the fuse box on both sides, however, there is no juice at the input to the turn signal flasher unit under the glove box. I found that the circuit goes through the hazard switch and flasher, but those things are nowhere in sight. The hazard flasher operation itself was disconnected by the dealer a very long time ago. The car manual and the Haynes book all say these parts are in plain site under the hood, but wrongo. It has been very difficult to find out where all these parts are located.

So, I cannot find these hazard flasher parts, and have read, written by you here, that these connections are behind the centre consule. I cannot get the centre consule removed because the screws holding the shifter boot will not budge (except 1), and I have tried everything including a hammer driven screwdriver to no avail.

What can you advise me on this problem, please?

ANSWER: Hi Tom.  Yes, the hazard flasher unit is located behind the centre console.  If this has been disconnected by a dealer, then probably a temporary connector has come loose.  You must remove the 4 screws holding the gear selector gaiter to get at it.

I would leave it alone and hot wire the indicator unit by running a green wire directly from the back of the heater switch.

QUESTION: Thanks again!

I'm not clear on this I'm afraid.

1. Which heater switch - the heater blower motor switch - or the heater temperature knob, or air flow knob? Are all these electrical? And how do you access the wires to hot wire it?

2. You say green wire, but the wire from the heater blower switch is either green/pink or green/yellow. Which is it?

3. Do I run the wire to the turn flasher under the dash/glove box, or whatever it is you mean by indicator unit, e.g., on the steering column with the turn indicator levers?

Answer
You are correct.  The power to the heater blower switch is Green/Pink.

Use a Scotchlock connector to take power from this wire directly to the turn indicator flasher unit - a small cube of metal with 2 wires going to it.  The flasher unit is clipped to the fascia underneath the main dashboard below and to the left of the wiper motor.  One of the wires is Green.  That is the connector that you must supply power to.  The Green wire can be unplugged because it is no longer live.
