MG Car Repair: SU Fuel Pump, rubber hoses, replacement pumps

Question
Hi I have a 79 MGB iam pulling out for the summer and its leaking from the fuel pump.
Is there a fix(new gasget?)or should i be looking for a new one
Thank you for your time!

Answer
It really depends where it is leaking from.  Modern fuel contains Ethanol, and older rubber hoses cannot cope with the stuff - they dry out and crack.  Check whether the problem is with the pump or with the hoses that connect to the pump.  Check the two large threaded banjo bolts to make sure they are tight (large Whitworth wrench required).  However, do not over-tighten the banjo bolts, or else they will leak and further tightening will just make it worse.  You might get away with just replacing the fibre washers on the banjo bolts.

If the pump leaks, it is best to fit a new one.  They can be repaired, but I would just buy a new one which has been converted to `pointless' and fit two new hoses.  Modern replacement pumps have been modified to take an O ring instead of the inner fibre washer, which is another improvement.
