MG Car Repair: Early MGB starter with separate solenoid, main lead, starter motor

Question
Hi, i have recently purchased a 1967 mgb gt which was a project car, i have now come to fit the main battery lead (1x12v battery) and not sure how they connect at the starter and solenoid. does the main lead from the battery go to the starter ? inertia type starter 1 connection studied thread, does the thick black wire from the separate solenoid go to the same connection on the starter.

Answer
Hi Peter.  You have the earlier Bendix type starter motor as opposed to the later pre-engaged starter.  You therefore have a separate solenoid, which is basically a big switch.

The thick black battery cable goes to either one of the solenoid terminals.  It doesn't matter which terminal you use, but the same terminal should also have a brown cable attached to it.

There should be a separate short length of thick black cable that goes from the other solenoid terminal to the starter motor.

The solenoid is actuated by a white wire with a red stripe.  When actuated, the solenoid connects the two big terminals together, thus powering the starter motor.
