MG Car Repair: 1963 mgb wont stay running, dampers, carbs

Question
the car will start and idle but when i take it down the road it bogs down and stalls. I am thinking either carbs or distributor any thoughts.
it has a 1800cc motor SU carbs.

Answer
Hi Bill.  I could do with a little background information.

If the car was working OK and this happened suddenly, then I would check that the carburetters have some oil in the dampers, and I would fit a replacement condenser.

If you have recently changed the coil, then perhaps you have got the small terminals the wrong way round.  I would swap them all over and see if the problem disappears.  It might make it worse.

If the car has been standing all winter and you are now trying to start it, then I would suspect that the carbs have gummed up with stale fuel.  Remove the tops of the dashpots and clean the inside with fuel, and clean the rings on the carburetter pistons as well.  Put it back together, remember to fill the dampers, and it should start.

If all this fails, get back to me.
