MG Car Repair: 79 MGB, moss motors, hazard switch

Question
First of all I would like to thank you for all of you post.  I fixed my turnsignals by changing both the turnsignal and hazard switch.  They now work! Now I have a problem with the automatic choke stick sometimes and wonder if there is anything I can do other than changing the choke.  I live in Ca. so I can't go to manual.  Any suggestions??

Answer
Hi Vicki.  Thank you for the feedback.  I am happy to help you.

The California specification was the worst MGB they ever made.  Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to your choke problem.  The single Stromberg was not a good design, and your unit is now 30 years old and worn out.  The auto choke is a common problem area, although it sometimes can be fixed by dismantling, cleaning thoroughly, and replacing any worn components.  Moss Motors can supply most parts, or failing that Burlen Services in the UK re-manufacture these units and they have a good worldwide postal service.

I wish you could just fit a UK specification twin SU setup and ditch all the emissions stuff, but the regulations in CA would make that approach illegal.  The way I see it, you only have 3 alternatives:

1) Fix or replace the auto choke on your car.
2) Change the car for a pre-75 MGB, which is exempt from the regulations.
3) Move to another state.
