MG Car Repair: mgb roadster, rubber replacement, bodge

Question
i have a 73 mgb roadster and it starts fine, but when i drive it and it gets hot,it wont start again no matter how long i turn it over, but will start on a roll..

Answer
Hi Ger
This is a carburetter problem.  Sounds like either heat soak or fuel level, or both.

Is the heat shield still there between the carbs and the exhaust manifold?  Where the fuel line runs across the bulkhead below the heater, is it exposed to the heat of the engine?  Where the flexible fuel hose runs to the carb, is it the original with steel braided cover, or have you used a rubber replacement?  All these things can soak up heat from the engine, so when you stop the car after a run the fuel in the float chambers gets too hot and starts to boil.  When you then try to start the engine, it is trying to suck vapour instead of liquid, and it won't start.  With a rolling start it just manages to start, after which cooler fuel flows in and all is OK again.

Finally, if you are using fuel with added Bio-Ethanol, then try to find a pump without it.  That stuff is TROUBLE.
