MG Car Repair: 78 MG Midget Turn Signals and Head Lamp Problem, head lamps, test light

Question
Hi Howard,

I have a 1978 MG Midget and she runs wonderfully, except when I went out tonight (the first time I've driven her in the dark). My head lamps were on, but when I signalled right they turned off by themselves. Turning left they remain on. I wondered if you could help.

The only caveat I have is that my signals weren't working this weekend, and it was the flasher unit at fault, so until my new flasher unit could arrive I swapped the hazard flasher over to the signals for the time being and it works fine. I don't know if this could have an effect.

Many Thanks,

Will

Answer
Hi Will,
The first test is to unplug what you did and test the head lights. The headlight do not normally have anything to do with the turn signals.
If unplugging the flasher don't correct the head lights you need a test light and a wiring diagram and turn on the head lights and the turn signal that makes the lights go off and start at the head light bulb and start testing for power with a test light and then check the ground at the head light and with your diagram start testing at each joint going toward the head light switch and you have to find the problem on the way.
If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one up on my web site for you to copy.
