MG Car Repair: Starting problem, haynes manual, fuel gauge

Question
I have a 1977 MGB. This all started when I was trying to trace down my fuel gauge and temp gauge problem. I have a haynes manual. I was trying to find the leads for the gauges and did not find them. I did not disconnect anything. Now when I turn the ignition it just cranks and will not start. I noticed that the turn signals, wipers and fuel pump were not working when on the ignition is on the on position. Every once in a while They work and then it will start. I replaced the ignition switch, but this has not resolved it. I tried to move wires looking for a bad connection also. I tried to trace the propblem but really do not know where to start. The ignition light lights up but seems nothing else works on the on position. Do you have any clue what or where the problem may be?

Answer
Hi Ben.  I have had two more like you in the past month.  Near the fuse box you will find a relay with 4 wires going into it.  They are Black, White, Brown, and White with a brown stripe.  Replace the relay.  Be careful, the brown wire is always live (hot).

*** PLEASE NOTE COLOURS ***

With a modern replacement relay, the pins are marked 30 (brown); 85 (Black);  86 (White); 87 (White/Brown).
