MG Car Repair: 1978 MGB non-vented gas cap question, gas caps, filler tube

Question
hi again Howard,

me again!  thanks for the info on the gas tank venting pipe.  i need a gas cap, called the parts place that i deal with. i wanted a vented cap but he said that the gas fill pipes are different sizes (pre emission standards) to the later models.  my problem is that whoever owned this 78 before removed all the emissions canistors that you had mentioned in a previous answer to me on a different question i had.  is there anything i can do to vent this tank other than get all the emission stuff? can i vent with a hose to somewhere outside the car? also, will the lack of emission stuff hurt the performance of the car? again, the engine is 1800cc with weber carb, etc.  i'm sorry for asking many questions so often.

Answer
Hi Kay,
As far as the car is concerned you can just run a hose down to vent the tank depending on your local emission laws. Most of the emission equipment will not affect the running of the car except EGR.

The gas caps were different as the emission cap had the grips on the outside of the filler tube and the older vented caps had the grips on the inside of the filler tube like old cars did.
