MG Car Repair: 1975 miget, air gap, arck

Question
I have changed the coil & plug wireing and still get a wimpy red arc out of the coil wire, barely quarter inch arck. Can the problem be the pick up coil or the distributor or what?

Answer
Hi Edward,
It is unlikely you still have the Lucas/Opus ignition system in the car as most failed while still in warranty so most were soon replaced by aftermarket systems. All that you can do is to confirm that you still have a resistor wire feeding the coil in the "run" position and that the coil is the correct coil and set the air gap. If you do all that, the only thing left is the igniter (what ever brand you may have)
This is one of the disadvantages of electronic ignition over pointed ignition. Even the designer of the system can't repair it if it dies.
All you can do is replace it. Many MGs and Triumphs were switched back to pointed distributors due to this.
