MG Car Repair: 1972 MGB water pump, coolant level, weep hole

Question
When I first started the cold car, a small amount of coolant came from around the water pump, when it heated up there was no more leaks. Could this be a water pump gasket or seal on the way out? I haven't noticed it before and and it was only a couple of tea spoons.

Answer
Hi Donald,
First try to snug down the Water pump bolts than take a small mirror in the morning and look closely at the bottom of the pump and you will see a small hole called a "weep hole" This is where any water that gets past the seal on the shaft can get out before it gets to the water pump bearings. If you see signs that the water is coming from that weep hole it is a sign the water pump seal may be going out. Just keep an eye on it and the coolant level. I have seen a small amount leak out of that weep hole for years before the pump needed replacing and on others I have seen them only last a few more months.
