Answer
Hi Doug:
When I have this kind of trouble with a generator it is almost always something to do with either the choke or carb throttle linkage. You can manually overide both and if that will keep it running well then you need to find where the linkage is binding or needs lubricating. If the engine dies because it floods out, say because the choke stays on, it will be very difficult to start for some time. I have had to pull the plugs out and crank it then to blow the fuel out of the cylinders before it will start. A dirty air filter will cause similar problems. The idle fuel mixture may be off some and there is an adjustment on the carb for that. To get close to the correct setting you turn the mixture screw all the way in clockwise then back out about a turn and a half to start, then turn it in or out till the engine runs smooth. Good luck.
