MG Car Repair: Overheating, meat thermometer, temp gauge

Question
My temperature gauge reads very high after driving a few miles.  the car runs and doesn't die out when this happens.  Could my gauge be bad ?  what temperatures are normal and where should I measure them ?  Just started happening.

Answer
Hi Steve,
Yes, the first thing you should do is check the coolant to see if it is really hot. An inexpensive meat thermometer works well to confirm a temp gauge reading.

If it is really hot, let me know and I will outline the procedure for testing the system and engine.
