MG Car Repair: Cleaning brakes, flap type, rear drums

Question
The discs and drums on my 1976 MGB, which has been warehoused for 10 years, are covered with rust, as you can imagine.  What is the proper technique for cleaning these?

Thanks,
Billy

Answer
Hi Billy,
On the disks just remove the caliper and hang it by a coat hanger or such so as not to put a strain on the flex hose and use a flat sanding disk in a drill. This will automatically spin the disk so you will get a even clean off of all the rust on both sides of the disk. You can just rub the brake pads on concrete to clean the surface of them. On the rear drums you can use one of those flap type sanding drums in a drill or if they are not too bad just hand sand them. You should hand sand the surface of the shoes too and look for brake fluid while you are there.
