MG Car Repair: 1976 Spitfire, point type distributor, moss motors

My car has an engine code #FP71240UE I guess this is a MG engine,but what year? It has a point type distributor and I don't know if it is the correct one.

Hi Terry,
The Spitfire never had an MG engine. (Austin engine) The MG Midget did however have the Spitfire engine (Standard engine)from 1975 on to 79, and it could be put in a Spitfire with no problems. Yes, a pointed distributor could be put in any of the Standard engines and because the electronic ignitions failed so often it was common thing to do.

If it came out of an MG Midget and was put in a Spitfire, it is a 1500 Spitfire engine.

I don't have an engine number chart to tell what year it was meant to be which doesn't matter because back then an MG Midget or a Spitfire was titled the year it was sold not for the year it was made.

Moss Motors or one of the parts suppliers may be able to tell you what year it was meant to be. If there is a reason you want to know.
