MG Car Repair: Midget fuel tank, tank caps, radiator shops

Question
I'm trying to replace the fuel tank on a 75 MG Midget.  The original tank appears
to have the evaporative loss feature and the replacement tanks don't have the
fitting for this.  Does this have to be hooked up?  How do I find a tank or get this
resolved?

Answer
Hi Bob,
You have to either talk to who ever sold you the tank to get you the correct tank or have a shop weld in a vent pipe (most radiator shops do tank repair) they could cut it off the old tank. If the tank has never had fuel in it they can do the job in minutes. If it is a used tank, there is a process to clean out the fuel fumes before welding.
Many states check the tank caps when testing for emissions so if your state does that you have no other options. The tank has to be vented through a charcoal canister as per federal law.
