Military Vehicle Repair: engine quit, hilo hawaii, tail pipes

Question
Thanks for the fast response, I took off the fuel filter and its is full of water and looks like bad fuel. I have a yellow wait light and that seems to be working just fine and could you tell about the water in fuel sensor? if water gets in the system does the sensor automatically shut the engine down? or does the light just come on? What will be the best way to clean the bad fuel and water out of the system? I live in the rainyest city in the usa Hilo, Hawaii and it's been pouring here alot this year so water must of got in the tank via fuel cap...      thank you for the help..

I just started up my M1009 it has setting for a little while.. I charged the batterys up good added 2.5 gals of new diesel fuel turn the key on and it started right up and sounded great. it was purrring just like a big happy pussy cat. I went in the house and got my wife to show off the beast and as soon as I slam the hood down the motor turn off

Thanks for the Question. Here are a few pointers.First of all I really dont think the hood had anything to do to the problem ,unless maybe from setting a while a little rodent may have knawed on a wire or two and the sudden impact of the hood broke the wire in to. When you crank the Beast over, does smoke come out of the tail pipes.I really would try putting a little more fuel in it, I dont think 2.5 gallons is a whole lot for the trucks. When you turn the key, does the WAIT light come on,if so for how long, and do you here a kinda odd sound right before the light goes out.Check out your 2 wires going to the front of the injection pump, make sure they arent corroded or off.You could take off the fuel filter and see what the fuel looks like coming out of it, then bleed the fuel system to get the air out, on a diesel if there is any air in the fuel system, it will not start or it will run pretty crappy.

Answer
Sorry for the delay, been away from home for the weekend. The water in fuel light is just a sensor, the detects moister in fuel. It doesnt do anything but let you know by the light coming on and I have only known of a couple that actually work. You will have to drain the fuel tank completly, by either removing it, or the other 2 ways I know of is 1) take off the fuel line at the injection pump, hook a rubber hose to it , but the rubber hose in a fuel can and crank the engine, the fuel pump will pump the fuel out into the fuel can,and sometimes if you are lucky gravity will take over and it will free flow so you wont have to crank it all the time. Another way is to pick up a cheap electric fuel pump, external type hook hoses to it,put one hose in the tank and the other in a can and hook it to 1 battery and let er rip. After you get all the bad stuff out,I would recommend heading down to your local autoparts store ,they should have a chemical that you put in the fuel tank when you fuel up that removes  water from fuel, and of course a new fuel filter.Once you put a new filter on it,On the filter housing there is a black valve on the top of it. Some of them have a clear hose hooked up to it, This is how you bleed the air out of the fuel system, Unhook the pink wire that connects to the front of the injection pump, this will keep it from starting, and I would bleed it for a while, just to make sure you get all the water and bad fuel out of the lines. I hope you get it going. Thanks again
