Mitsubishi Repair: 97 eclipse weird rpm, no speedo and, stalling, mitsubishi eclipse gs, transmission control unit

Question
Ok, I've read a lot of questions on this page as well as on other websites  but so far I haven't seen my exact questions and I hope I'm not being repetitive. So my 97 Mitsubishi eclipse gs automatic just started doing something really weird last night. When I'm on idle the rpm drops below 1 and at times would shut off, the second problem being that the car won't shift to 2nd gear it doesn't make any noises or anything it just won't shift to second and the last of my troubles is that the speedometer doesn't work which I read might be related to the car not shifting something called "limp-in mode" but I am not sure how true that is please help and thank you in advanced

Answer
Jose,
"Limp-mode" for an automatic transmission is typical if the car's transmission control unit detects a problem in the system.  This mode is programmed to reduce further damage to the car and allows the driver to drive to a mechanic on its own.  The speedometer gauge is connected to transmission directly with via a speed sensor gear.  And if there is damage to the transmission, problems with the speedometer can be evident.  Your best bet would be to have a transmission shop inspect your transmission and address the speedometer issue as well.
Good luck!
