The stereo in my 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT will not play loud. It used to play very loud, but now only plays loud enough for you to barely hear it. Sometimes the radio will go out completely, but you can still play the CD but the volume remains the same. What could be the problem?

There sounds like there is a problem with the stereo deck itself.  There is most likely a component inside the stereo which controls the volume gain that is failing; such as one of the many capacitors or the volume potentiometer.  Your only remedy may be to buy a new stereo.  There are several places that sell and install them.  Even major electronics stores BestBuy offer car stereos and installation.
