Mitsubishi Repair: Torque convertor Question, linkage problem, torque convertor

Question
2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse 6 cycle Front Wheel Drive Automatic 86,000 miles

we were driving down the road and the engine started to rev up like it was in neutral. the car came to a stop and I tried to put it in all the gears and nothing would Happen. the transmission is going into all the gears because the lever assembly on the side of the tran is moving but nothing is happening. there is no grinding or any mechanical sound present. I don't know if it could be the torque convertor or the oil filter what do you think?

Answer
Randy,
You may have a broken shifting cable linkage.  It's typically rare for a torque converter to suddenly go back unless there was any recent damage to the underside of the car.  If you're unable to determine if there is a linkage problem, have the car broke to a mechanic or transmission shop of a more thorough diagnosis.
Good luck!
