Mitsubishi Repair: 1999 Galant Starter, mitsubishi galant, little cars

Question
My 1999 Mitsubishi Galant fails to start.  I only hear a
very soft hum from under the hood when I turn the ignition;
however, the lights all work.  When I tried to jump the
car, I heard a single click for each time I tried to start
the car.  After doing a little bit of research, it seems
like my starter no longer functions.

About how much would it cost to get a mechanic to replace
the starter?  Would it be very difficult to replace it
myself?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Jason: Is the battery putting out enough volts? Is the cables tight on the battery? These little cars are very touchy about those cables being tight, how about is the battery clean where the cables hook up to it? Ok, as for the starter, yes you could change it yourself. But you should get yourself a repair manual for your car. They cost around $20.00, parts stores sell them and well worth the money, if you are going to do work like this. As the manual will walk you through the whole thing from taking the neg cable off the battery to the replacing of the starter. I have no idea what it would cost to replace the starter by at shop, every area is different with costs and the such. I put in about the battery because sometimes people just guess what is wrong with their cars, so one should always start with the easy things first such as the battery. But reading what you wrote again I see you say the lights all work and so the battery must be putting out enough volts then. One other thing do you have tools and some way to get your car up like jack stands or something like that? Because the starter is under the engine. I guess what you will have to do is call around to different shops and see what they charge for such a job. Then decided where you want to take the car or fix it yourself. God bless: Linda
