My Mirage has been making a loud growling noise from the front end. I can't tell which side it comes from and all of the front end components are tight and have no play in them. When I spin the wheels while off the ground it makes a sort of ratcheting noise. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. It doesn't seem like the normal cv joint noise.

Does the engine make noise when it's running and in park/neutral, or does it make this noise when in gear?  This may help determine whether the problem is with the engine or the transmission.  I'm not sure if the growling has anything to do with the ratcheting noise at the wheels.  I recommend having your mechanic check out those noises.  It may be something as simple as low engine oil or transmission oil, or it could be something serious like a bad transmission or internal engine problem.
