Mitsubishi Repair: fuel odor, mitsubishi montero sport, mitsubishi montero

Question
i have a '99 mitsubishi montero sport 4x4. yesterday while driving i smelled gasoline. the odor seems to come from the rear and driver side areas of the car. it accelarates and drives well. doesnt stall.  today it struggled to start as if gas wasnt being pumped properly. is this a fuel filter or fuel pump problem? Help. i dont want to spend money on something i dont need. thanks

Answer
Eric,
You may have a small gas leak if the odor is really strong.  If there is a leak, that can cause fuel pressure to drop a bit, making it difficult to start.  Even a worn rubber gasket on your fuel cap can cause this.  Be on the lookout for gasoline on the ground and check your fuel cap.  If this continues to happen, have a mechanic inspect your fuel system.
Good luck!
