Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi galant (94) fuel issues, mitsubishi galant, dead fuel

I have a 94 galant, 185K miles still ran like a champ.  One cold day it wouldn't start for my wife.  THe next warm saturday I jumped it, no problem, everything sounded fine.  We went to run some errands, and after 2 stops it wouldn't start for over half an hour.  It has randomly started and run or not started at all.  The car turns over, very well since the shop had me put a new battery in it.  They are now trying to tell me that the fuel pump was dead, but a car won't intermittently drive with a dead fuel pump.  Any suggestions?  at almost 200K miles I don't really want to dump a lot of cash into this project, but my wife would like her car back.  Thanks

Hi, The first thing I would do honestly is bring it to a local parts store like autozone and have them check your alternator for voltage it could be on it's way out. If this test good. The the next thing I would do it put your car in the on position and take your gas cap off and put your ear at the hole and listen for a (Whirring Noise) If you hear one it's good if there is not one then it is gone.
