Mitsubishi Repair: trouble getting into 5th gear, mitsubishi pajero, 5th gear

Hi can you help? Am thinking of purchasing a 1992 mitsubishi pajero but present owner says that getting into 5th has been an issue and it gets better when the car is warmed up...... what could this be and is it something that should put me off the purchase?

Luci: I think you should find another car; I know you are really crazy about this car but still it could be very costly down the road for you. Because 5th gear now and next week it might be another gear; then another. And with time you will not be able to get the car to shift at all. Then you will have to do some very costly repairs. Surely you can find another car, you like and one will not start out with problems right off. You know sometimes people will tell you anything just to get you to buy that car. And there must be a reason they are selling it. I am sure they know what is wrong with it, the cost to fix it and so they have decided to sell the car. Because it would be a costly fix. Sorry.
