Mitsubishi Repair: 86 colt vista, balance shaft, colt vista

Question
I have a harmonic vibration in the engine at about 2000 to 3000 rpm.  what could this be caused by, balance shaft not alined properly, maybe motor mounts, engine recently rebuilt, but teeth stripped on timing belt, re installed, more vibration was the result.  Help!!!!!

Answer
Brad: I would say it is either the balance shaft not being located in the right place, or the timing belt might not be up to the right marks. My repair manual talks about to be sure that the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket and the balance shaft sprocket are aligned properly. Then also make sure the tension side has no slack. It could be you have a bit of slack where there shouldn't be any. You should be able to check the motor mounts to see if they are loose. I would have the shop or who ever installed the timing belt to check that balance shaft sprocket. But if you were driving the car when the teeth stripped on the timing belt so it had to be re-installed. You might have done something to the engine too. So the vibration. I hope it is just a problem with the balance shaft and nothing more. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
