Mitsubishi Repair: 99 Galant P0340 Cam Position Sensor, newer cars, older cars

Question
I have a 1999 Galant 4 cylinder that the check engine has come on and lately has had trouble starting after driving and turned if off. Then tried to start it but would not start for 1/2 hour or so.

I had it checked out at the auto store and system said was a P0340 failure.
Can I fix this myself?

I have rebuilt engines and such on older cars and have good working knowledge of vehicles but I am not familiar with these sensors.

Thanks Linda,
Rick

Answer
Rick: I don't work on such new cars. But in the ones I do that sensor is in the distributor cap. If your car still has a distributor cap, just replace that and you will replace the sensor. If not replace whatever it has that replaced the distributor and you will again replace that sensor. Oh if you do replace the distributor cap remember to replace the rotor too. I know some newer cars have had the distributor replaced with an different part but still that sensor is in whatever replaced the distributor and therefore you could change it yourself. If you have worked on engines, then you should be able to handle this just fine. I know this is about as clear as mud but I hope you understand what I am saying. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
