Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Galant, ticking, lifter, galant

Question
1994 Galant I bought today, it has about 122000 miles on the odometer, and basically, it's in perfect condition, except it burns oil, and it needs to be changed like once every 2 months, maybe every one month, not completely sure, but is this normal, well is it common, and is it easily fixed? I'm 16 years old, so my budget is limited... my other problem is the ticking, I was told it was the lifter by my mechanic, and that it is a lot more expensive to repair manually when you can fix it with a different type of oil, but never really told me what kind... any suggestions, what brand etc, thanks in advance!

Answer
Ben: I understand being young and all, but your car useing oil is due to the rings going. But if you are careful with the car, no fast starts and pushing the engine hard; it should be ok.Go to a parts store and get a manual for your car. It will explain all kinds of things about your car and it is good to know your car inside as well as the outside too. The lifter is not a big deal but I am not sure that your mechanic meant by the oil. Other then a heavy weight maybe, so try 10w30 weight. It will be harder to start in the Winter but yet better for the engine. Maybe you could get some of that oil I have seen around for cars with high miles. That would help it. Go to a parts store or a large Wal-Mart check out the things they have for oil use. Sometimes you can add things to help the rings sit better and so stop some of the oil use. Maybe you should ask your mechanic what he meant too. Oh if you take care of the car it will take care of YOU. Hope this helps and good luck!
