Mitsubishi Repair: transmission, mitsubishi eclipse gst, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Hi I have a 1995 Mitsubishi eclipse GST with a completely stock transmission and about a week ago I was racing at a local track. After the first run the transmission made some strange clanking noises but they went away. I started the second run in first gear and then shifted to second only to discover there was no second gear. It went in gear fine (no grinds etc.) It just revved like it was in neutral. when I stopped, I realized there was no first gear either but third, fourth and fifth worked fine. After further inspection i found that i can "shift" into first and second gear without using the clutch. What is your professional opinion on the problem?

Answer
Daniel,
It sounds like the splines on the drive shaft for the collar on the 1st/2nd gear have stripped and is now just spinning freely.  It's also possible that collar has broke and will no longer engage the teeth on the 1st or 2nd gear.  Either way, you're probably looking at a tranny rebuild in your future.
Good luck!
