Mitsubishi Repair: 97 Mit. Eclipse GS...check engine light, neg bat, eclipse gs

My check engine light came on today so, I came here to browse through the Q & A's.  Realized that I had not put my gas cap back on properly, so I fixed that and then disconected the neg. bat. cable to reset and the light is still on.  Any other ideas?  Not sure if it makes a difference or not but my reverse lights suddenly stopped working also and it's not the bulbs or fuses.  Thanks!

The backup lights not functioning and the check engine light may be 2 seperate issues.  But you should find out what error code your car's computer is throwing.  You can find that out your by following the procedure described in the link below:
