Mitsubishi Repair: Problem with clutch/transmission, clutch master cylinder, mitsubishi eclipse gst

Question
I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST with an ACT racing clutch and lightened flywheel.  A little while ago I was driving and it felt like the clutch(pedal)lost all pressure and then stayed by the firewall.  I pulled it up with my foot and everything seemed fine enough.  I later checked the clutch fluid, it was really low or gone, so I added some more.  Recently, probably since the pedal going to the floor, shifting has gotten harder, especially into first and reverse.  Could you give some possible causes.  Thanks!!

Answer
Jason,
You should be keeping an eye on the fluid level.  If after you fill it, it continues to get lower and lower, you obviously have a leak.  Leaks most commonly occur around your clutch master cylinder and your clutch slave (release) cylinder.

With a racing clutch that is usually much stiffer than a stock clutch, there is a lot more pressure being put on the hydraulic clutch system.  It's common practice for folks that use those stiffer clutches to also replace the release cylinder.  Also, the release clutch fork and fulcrum should have been inspected when the clutch was installed.

The clutch master cylinder can also develope leaks with stiffer clutches and just in general over time.  The pistons and springs inside the master cylinder can also wear down over time.  Inspect the outside of the clutch master cylinder on the firewall, and also grab a flashlight and look to where your clutch pedal attaches to the inside of the firewall under the steering column.  You may notice clutch fluid leaking on the inside of the car.  In this case, replace or rebuild the clutch master cylinder.  The dealership sells rebuild kits for that.
Good luck!
