Mitsubishi Repair: 98 galant, automatic trans., transmission control unit, transmission shops

Question
I was going about 60mph and had to punch it to avoid another car. When I did, the car started slowing down and I got to a stop. It will go into park but no other gears. The shifter sounds ok, but will not go into gear. Some good news sure would be appreciated. Thanks. Of course I asked a transmition mech. and he said the trans. had to be rebuilt. Hopefully you will have a better answer. ( the shifter will go into all the gears,but will not move the car)

Unfortunately, my news will not be much better.  Having your tranny rebuilt, or buying a rebuilt tranny may be your only option.  It's possible you just have a broken shifter linkage or malfunctioning transmission control unit, but you'd have to let a mechanic check those items to be sure.  I would first advise you contact several transmission shops and ask what they would recommend.  It also can't hurt to call the service department at your local dealership and ask their opinion as well.
