Mitsubishi Repair: Transmission, mitsubishi galant, torque converter

Question
I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant ES. When I start the car up now and put it into drive or reverse it does not move sometimes. It is like it is in park still. I can also hear a whirling noise. Other times it runs fine. Before about a month ago I would use to have to start the car up and then let it warm up. Then I would pull off, but the car would be jerking. If I would drive it and not stop, it would be okay. It would run fine. A neighbor of mine told me that i probably would need a whole new transmission.  When i took it to a transmission shop in November to get the transmission screen changed and the transmission checked they told me that the transmission was fine. Someone also told me that it could be my torque converter. I would just like to know what the problem could be and what the price of the repair would be.

Answer
Sharde.
There are several presumable causes for a forward/reverse movement problem.  A torque converter problem is possible, but these are the items that your mechanic should focus on with high priority:
- Manual linkage.  Have it adjusted within spec
- Check fluid level
- Check line pressure.  May be low due to bad seal, leakage, etc.
- Check valve body.  May have a sticky valve or needs adjustment.
- Check the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve.  May be damaged or have a bad electrical connection.

You can tell your mechanic to check these items specifically.  It would be very difficult to even ball park a price.  If you just need adjustments without parts, all your cost would be labor related.  But you may be able to have it diagnosed and fixed for around $500.
Good luck!
