Mitsubishi Repair: idle speed, throttle position sensor, automatic tranny

Question
I bought my daughter a 1996 Eclipe, 2.0 non turbo, automatic tranny with overdrive. First Mitsubishi and first Eclipes I've ever owned so I don't know my way around this car.

The problem is the car's idle speed. The car starts great, but you have to hold down the gas peddle or it will not idle. Also, when you come to stop, the engine quits.  You have to hold one foot on the gas and one on the brake.

Can you tell me how to adjust the idle speed and where to finfd this adjuster.  I assume it should idel at about 750 RPM.

Thanks
Dave

Answer
Dave,
Setting the idle speed is not a real complicated procedure, but I don't answer "how to" procedures; as they can get too involved, and I may miss a step or two.  There are two service manuals you can get for car, and they are available at most auto parts stores.  Both Chiltons and Haynes makes a manual and both list the idle setting procedure, and they go for about $15.

The manual will also list other items to check if your car cannot hold an idle.  For example, the problem may be a faulty Idle Speed Control motor, base idle setting screw, throttle position sensor, your timing may be off, or even a faulty fast idle air valve.
Good luck!
