Mitsubishi Repair: 96 gst eclipse spyder, intake hoses, vacuum lines

Question
i have a 96 eclipse gst with turbo, and when i accelerate the turbo gauge goes up like normal, but the car doesnt accelrate.  this only happens once in a while.  most of the time it runs fine.
i changed the spark plugs.  i just took off the cat but it ran like crap, so i put it back on.  i was wondering if maybe this cause it because now my check engine light came on even though that cat is hooked back up. thanks

Answer
John,
It's very possible you have an air leak somewhere.  The turbo gauge on your instrument cluster is slighty better than useless.  All it is doing is indicating that air is getting to your turbo, and little more.  The reading on it is far from accurate.  Make sure all your intake hoses and vacuum lines are firmly attached.  You may want to consider removing your intercooler and cleaning it out.  A dirty intercooler will greatly reduce turbo boost and acceleration.  Your intercooler is aluminum and can be puncturerd relatively easily.  Check if your leaks.  This can be done after it has been removed.  Just fill it with water and see if any leaks out.

Your Check Engine Light (CEL) may also be a result of the poor acceleration.  Removing the cat may have affected your oxygen sensor.  If your CEL is on, and you have an AutoZone in your area, you can bring it there and they can check your CEL for free.  Get a diagnosis and that will probably pin point your exact problem.
Good luck!
