Mitsubishi Repair: My car wont start, camshaft position sensor, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
I have a 96, Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2.0L, Rs, Manual. This is what happen to my car.. I had just finished my trip back home from Fsu (a 550 mile drive) and then about two days later (First two days car was fine) on my way to the gym as I put the car in 4th gear (driving normal) it just turned off on me and does not turn back on.. The car will crank but doesn't turn on. I've had the timing belt, fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor changed before this (less then a year ago) problem happen. And the only problem I've had after that is that sometimes the car would turn off right when I start it and then the next time I try to turn it on its perfect. I honestly have no clue what caused this to happen. My car only has 96,000 miles always gets its oil changed and fluids checked And I would greatly appreciate it if you drop some knowledge on me because I'm clueless at this point. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Eric,
For your car to die while driving may indicate a fuel or sensor problem.  Have your fuel pressure checked to make sure there's enough pressure in the lines.  Any mechanic should be able to do that.  When a fuel pump starts to wear out, it doesn't alway provide enough fuel to your injectors.  If your car's computer senses too much air relative to the amount of fuel it's calling for, it will kill your ignition to prevent detenation.  That's one thing to check.

Another thing to have checked is your camshaft position sensor.  If that sensor is malfunctioning, it may detect that your timing is off, when it really isn't.  That too will cause your computer to tell your igition to shut off.

If all else fails, have your car's computer (ECU) inspected for damage.  There is a known issue for Mitsubishi vehicles made between 89-94 that used underrated capacitors in the ECU.  Overtime, those capacitors would begin to leak and cause random problems; stalling and inability to start are typical symptoms.  It's possible a similar occurance happened in your ECU.

Have those items checked and hopefully you'll come closer to pin-pointing your problem.
Good luck!
