Mitsubishi Repair: 99 marage fires but wont start, coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensor

Question
I bought this car as a fixer uper It always ran perfict till I put it up for sale . the dome light ran the battery down so I had to jump it, it started up great I drove it back to my house about a mile shut it off and tried to re start it, it did but slugeshly because of the weak battery a couple hours later after charging the battery a little, I turned the key and it fired but instently died it does that most of the time, if I pump the gas repeatedly I can get it to idle for about 2-5 seconds then it dies, But get this if I unplug the map sensor {on the fire wall} and unplug the two outer plugs of the conputer and turn up the idle I can drive it unfortunitly the car wont shift that way Im trying to find out what is wrong so far I fave changed conputers, I have changed the map sensor {i dont think mitsubishi calls it that} Iv got good spark and Im getting fule to the fule rail I dont have a fule presher gage But I did check it with a air presher gage and it sead 60 psi , and Iv got a clean air filter Im thinking IM bypassing SOMETHING when I have it hooked up that other way please help me .

Answer
Jeremy,
Unable to start the engine while hot could indicate a malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor.  You may also have a throttle position sensor or an idle speed control motor problem.

You may be bypassing the coolant temp sensor or the EGR sensor.  I'm not sure why this would start when the battery dies, but it may have reset your car's computer.  It may have 're-learned' the bad sensor and now is causing your car to have this problem.  Check the items I've mentioned and maybe you'll find the problem.  If you can find a service manual for your car, you'll be able to find exactly what you unplugged to make it work.  That should lead you to the exact problem.  If neither Haynes or Chiltons makes a service manual for your model and year, you can always purchase a service manual from the dealership.  You can throw in that manual to sweeten the deal if you decide to sell the car.
Good luck!
