Mitsubishi Repair: Shutter at idle, mitsubishi eclipse, mitsubishi dealership

Question
Sir,

I own a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS. I have been experiencing a shutter from the drivers side of the engine at idle. I was wondering if you had ever heard of this and could give me advice on how to fix the problem. I also think my idle is kinda low at 600 rpm's. I raise to about 800 rpm's and the shutter goes away. If you think the low idle is causing it, could you tell me how to raise it safely. Thanks for your time and assistance, Dustin

Answer
Dustin,
To raise your idle, you need to run through a certain procedure outlined by Mitsubishi.  There is a idle adjustment connector and a base idle setting screw (BISS).  The idle adjustment must be grounded as well as the car's computer.  Unless you have a repair manual to guide you through this yourself, take your car to a mechanic.  For most Eclipses with manual transmissions, the idle should be 750 RPM (+-50), and for an automatic transmission, it should be around 850 RPM (+-50).  But call your local Mitsubishi dealership to see if perhaps your warranty still covers this.  It may be free to fix.
Good luck!
