Mitsubishi Repair: runs rough, couple teeth, egr valve

Question
1992 Mitsubishi eclipse. 2.0  manual trans.
The car ran rough then smoothed out on its own.  It later began to run rough again and has not corrected itself.

Answer
Brian,
The first thing you should check is you PCV valve.  It's located on the valve cover, near the throttle body.  It has a rubber tube attached to it that connects the PCV valve to the intake manifold.  Sometimes if that valve is sticking, your engine will run rough.  Sometimes it can correct itself, but it's an inexpensive item (about $5) and should be replaced at least once per year. Another possible cause for your problem could be a clogged EGR valve.  Many times when that valve gets clogged, you can feel the bucking at low speeds.

Other possible causes can include faulty spark plugs, worn sark plug wires, clogged air filter, clogged fuel filter, a malfunctioning alternator, or it's possible your timing belt has slipped a couple teeth.

I'd recommend having a mechanic take a look.  You may just need a simple tune-up.  But if your timing belt has not been changed within the past 65,000 miles, I'd highly recommend you get it changed.  Even if that's not the problem, it's a real good idea if you have lots of miles on your engine.
Good luck!
