Motorcycle Repair: HONDA SABRE CLUTCH / GEARS

Hi, I recently purchased a 2002 Honda Sabre VT1100C2 with about 15000 miles. When I shift from first to second it is ok up to about 15mph. Shifting from 1st to second above 20mph gives me a slight grind. Shifting to all other gears is fine. Is this normal? Don't notice any signs of clutch slipping. Thank you.

Hi Harry,

The shifting can be a little clunky depending on engine speed and clutch
use. When you shift from first to second the shifter has to travel past
the neutral position. This requires good clutch release and also
a more definite push on the shift lever to move the shifter
firmly into the second gear position.

Any lazy shifting can result in gear grinding. It might be possible
to get some wear on gear engagement dogs after much use but
usually being more careful about having the clutch fully pulled
before shifting and then shifting firmly will help.

The other gears do not require movement through neutral so
they are less of a problem. Warped clutch plates could
cause some drag on all shifts and even some different
engine oils may make a difference.

If it stays in second gear once engaged then it is not too much to
worry about.
