Motorcycle Repair: Honda CBX-1000 cam chain, honda cbx 1000, cam chain

I have a '78 CBX-1000 and i have taken the engine apart and just started to put it back together. I have lost the connection with the cam chain and crankshaft on the lower end and desperately do not want to take the engine back apart to set it back on the gear. Is there any way to reattach with the top end on?

I have never had this issue, is the head already on?  With the guides in place you may have a very difficult time to try and put the chain around the gear on the crank again.  It helps if you take the tension off the back tensioner and lock it in place, then dance the chain back in place.  If the head is off, then the camchain guides are not in the way and you can get the chain in place without too much trouble.
