Motorcycle Repair: head specs, digital vernier caliper, ironhead sportster

can you please tell me the correct way to measure the valve pretrussion on my ironhead sportster.I am using my digital vernier caliper.Using the depth stick on the guide shoulder and the bottom of the caliper on the valve stem is this correct thankyou in advance
